I consider myself a strong woman. I have struggled with this notion for a long time as it seems that our American culture misconstrues strong women, even when they are very nice people, to be too aggressive often mistaking assertiveness for aggressiveness. I found out that knowledge, self assuredness, feeling comfortable in one's own skin are traits that are intimidating to meek women and all types of man. Consequently, even though I am very well educated and experienced in my field, I have been denied job opportunities. One of these jobs for example was given to another woman who was less qualified and experienced than I am but she was less likely to rock any boat or make any waves. I find that potential employers are interested in change agents that will transform their work place, however, they repeatedly hire people that provide mediocre performance. It is only the few who can see the enthusiasm of the strong woman, the liveliness, and the drive to succeed and contribute at the work place.
Strong women come in all shape and sizes, employed or not, stay-home mothers or top executives. I tend to gravitate toward strong women and most of my friends are strong. I love how they stimulate me to think in different directions, agree to disagree and even sometimes never to discuss a sensitive topic; throughout it all they will always be there when you need them with a hug, a small book, or a kind word. They are like sisters to me and I appreciate their friendship very much.
Strong women sail through life with courage and wonderment. They meet challenges head on and are there to support their families and friends. But if you really know strong women, you know that they are probably the weakest/strongest women you have ever had the pleasure of meeting. Although they can move mountains their soul needs nourishment and attention from loved ones.
A while back when I thought about the concept of strong women I searched the Internet. I could not find any reference addressing my notion of strong women; I only found sites that addressed physical strength including strong bones and diet. It is possible that I missed these site. If you find any studies about strong women, please share them with us.
